Description

Wolfgang Jellinghaus' exploration of the work of Antonio de Torres has led him to build a selection of high-quality, but affordable models based on original Torres instruments of different sizes and eras. This particular guitar is based on one of three Torres guitars that had been owned by the great Francisco Tárrega - his second in fact, which was made for him by Torres and completed in 1883, numbered SE 49. We purchased and sold the original guitar in 2021, and while it was in our showroom we took detailed measurements and photos which we provided to Wolfgang Jellinghaus for this replica. Wolfgang has meticulously copied every detail of the original including using flamed maple for the two-piece sides and four-piece back, elaborate rosette and perhaps most strikingly, the "fish" MOP inlays in the wings of the bridge as well as period-style tuning machines, beautiful replicas in themselves. Its slightly more compact size and lightweight build is a bit deceptive at first – once you pluck the first note, it has a huge sound, very full and robust with great lyrical charm in the trebles and fat basses - rich in overtones across the entire register. Startlingly easy to play, the comfortable neck shape and fast response make this a true players guitar. Hand-built in Jellinghaus' small facility in China, these are small-production, concert-level instruments made with select and beautiful materials, and entirely French-polished by hand. This model has a clear finish giving the guitar a "new" look - as the original Torres would have appeared in 1883. Overall this is another very charming replica of one of classical guitar's most iconic historical instruments. At this price point these are a great value for the serious student or concert player on a limited budget.
